Hell-evision: American Horror Story

FX puts out some really good television. Archer, Sons of Anarchy, Wilfred, Rescue Me. So whenever they are promoting something new my interest is already piqued. And if it’s horror, I’m definitely clamoring for more information.

Enter American Horror Story. We’ve seen the previews here and there and it’s definitely looking promising. First impressions were that it would be a series of shorts. Something like Creepshow or Tales from the Crypt. But it appears to be a single, multi-episode tale.

American Horror Story has a pretty successful creative team backing it: Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk of Glee and Nip/Tuck fame as well as Tim Minear from cult favorites Firefly, Angel, and The X-Files. This promises some high tension drama but can it deliver the spook factor? Adding acting clout with some Hollywood well knowns like Jessica Lange and Dylan McDermott doesn’t hurt either. Most exciting is Denis O’Hare’s return to horror from his stint as True Blood’s Season 3 bad ass, Russell Edgington.

From what’s been released in clips and adverts, the imagery is disturbingly artistic. Reminiscent of the stylization of the Cell, the visuals are both beautiful and . . . just kind of wrong.  I’m curious to see how they can translate what appears to be R-rated material to television without losing the edge. Hopefully it takes a subtle tone that lends to the story instead of trying to carry it solely on over-the-top imagery.

I highly recommend checking out their YouTube Channel and watch all the “Clue” clips. Artsy creepy.

American Horror Story airs Wednesday, October 5th at 10pm EST.

About Ash Wednesday

Some say the pen is mightier than the sword. Ash Wednesday believes so, especially when you use one to stab somebody in the eye! Her first big girl book was Jurassic Park in 4th grade and she's been a sci-fi/horror book fan ever since. With her affinity for things with big teeth and biting habits, she also loves good (or really bad) zombie, vampire and supernatural flicks. For the record, vampires don't sparkle.
