Horror Costume of the Month – Amanda Young from Saw

During our time at Dragon*Con, the MurderHers ran into the fabulous Linda and flipped out over her incredible Amanda Young costume from Saw. Is that a Reverse Bear Trap on her head? Why yes it is!

First of all, why did you choose Amanda Young from Saw?

I wanted to do something different for Dragon*Con this year and being a horror movie fanatic, I thought I’d build a prop from one of the most horrifying and well-known movies from my time. I also didn’t want to fall in the superhero category this year. I wanted to wow the con-goers and push myself into recreating something as outrageous as the reverse bear trap.

The Reverse Bear Trap looks absolutely amazing. How did you make it?

Thank you! I actually constructed the reverse bear trap with my boyfriend. We had a failed attempt trying to use foam insulation until we came up with our own technique. For most o

f the trap, we used craft foam, strong super glue, wood glue with water, wood filler and poster board. The sprockets and clamps were actually sculpted from a few pieces of styrofoam covered in wood glue. The nuts and bolts were all nylon and the only metal we used on the trap was for the lock. I do have to give all the painting credit to my boyfriend, it really came to life. I was even a little scared to put it on it looked so real!

We love chicks who love horror! What are is your favorite horror movie?

I LOVE The Exorcist. You never remember how scary it is until you sit down to watch it and then you are like, “OMG, where’s my mommy?” For being a movie made in the 70’s without today’s technology is just mind-blowing.

Are you planning any future horror costumes?

I know for a fact that I want to do more horror costumes. As far as what, I have no idea! Limits will be pushed further for the next one. I know that much.

Thanks to Linda for sharing your awesome horror costume with us! We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

If you know a horror costume that’s beyond horrific and deserves some scare-time, send a submission including character name, costumer’s preferred moniker, a photo, and contact information to the MurderHers.
