I went to see Underworld: Awakening this weekend and? It’s no Rise of the Lycans – but if you’re looking for a good action flick to get yourself pumped? It’s perfect.
The movie begins with Selene and Micheal attempting to escape the city. You see – humans have declared war. No longer do the vampires and lycans hide their existence in the shadows. So instead of fighting with ourselves based on our own differences we have defined a new enemy based on theirs.
And so the culling of the herd begins. The only way to remove a ‘disease’ is to cleanse.
And cleanse we did.
Door to door DNA testing began. And if you were found to be different? You were killed. Husbands, wives, children – were slaughtered mercilessly by the human race. Vampires were dragged outside to burn, lycans shot. No non-human was safe. And so the only thing left to do? Was run.
Unfortunately, you can only run so far.
Twelve years pass and it is revealed that Selene has been held captive (frozen) in a laboratory. But she is freed, by presumably Micheal, and sets out to hunt him down in a world now unfamiliar to her. She searches for him through flashes – a sort of telekinetic link they share when close – but Michael is nowhere to be found.
Instead? Selene stumbles on to her daughter. Who we as the viewers can only assume was harvested from her twelve years ago. And she (Eve)? Is a perfect little hybrid. Just like daddy.
And so the battle for survival begins. It seems the existence of this child has riled up an old enemy. The Lycans. It is revealed that some of each of the races managed to survive the great genocide through taking refuge underground.
Small pockets of vampire nests are hidden under abandoned plants while the remaining lycans run amuck under the city streets – diseased, starving, and only willing to suddenly expose their continuing existence to humans – for the sake of this little girl.
Without giving too many spoilers – let’s just say I am going to assume that this movie will paint the lycans in an even more terrible light for most people.
But remember this – there is only so long that you can kick a dog before it bites back. How long did the vampires treat lycans as lower life slaves? And now the humans think they can too? Sometimes ensuring the survival of your race – is worth anything.
Unfortunately, Underworld: Awakening is not even remotely close to being a solid film like some of its predecessors. The holes in the plot are large enough to swallow something as huge and ridiculous as Wolf Zilla (see above picture) and the open-ended lets-make-another-sequel are getting kind of old hat.
That being said, overall the film was a great action flick. The fight scenes were done seamlessly, the gore - albeit minimal - was handled incredibly well, and Kate Beckinsale always looks damn good in a PVC suit (her new costar Theo James isn’t too shabby either).

Did you see it this weekend too? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
