Thoughts: Back in April 2011 we posted the trailer for the Uruguayan horror The Silent House. Is this another Americanization of an original foreign film? Yes, yes it very much is. The original film was never released in the US, but the story has been adapted from Gustavo Hernández original real time, hand-held camera horror to cater to American appetites. The story directly follows the original with Sarah (Laura) helping her father prepare a house for sale and soon finding herself the victim of ghosts, or a home invasion or whatever.
The voice-over and “based on a true story” shtick immediately turns me off. It’s just trying too hard. Buuuut the trailer quickly redeems itself. A lot of the things that made Hernández’s film so interesting (namely presented as one long single take) are there and the terror presented by Olsen looks highly compelling. Which is what will make me go see this. As is the nature of a personal terror style film, the terrorized inevitably carries it.
