Humans love to fight. Especially over land. It’s been that way since the dawn of modern man, and it will probably always be that way. These battles for land control can be anything from political posturing to outright bloody war. One such fight resulted in a very strange and creepy time capsule from 1974, the Cyprus Green Line.
Cyprus is a small island nation in the eastern most Mediterranean and has been the subject of fighting between Greek and Turkish Cypriots for the last 50 years. In 1974, Turkey invade Cyprus and after a brief war, the United Nations set up a demilitarized zone, known as the Green Line that effectively bisected Cyprus into two countries: Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
This demilitarized zone runs roughly 112 miles and varies from 11ft wide to 4 1/2 miles wide and is fiercely patrolled by both sides, even fatally so.
So why is all of this obscure recent history of note on a horror blog? Because NOTHING HAS CHANGED SINCE 1974!!
The people who once lived along the Green Line were forced to vacate their homes and leave everything behind. If you want to know what the apocalyptic world without humans would look like if it took place in 1974… this is it.
Unfortunately pictures are hard to come by what with being shot on sight a legitimate concern. This is the sort of stuff post apocalyptic films are made of.
