Rotting International: La Isla de las Muñecas, Xochimilco, México

I’ve never been to Mexico, but I sure as hell want to go one day. No, not to Cancun, either. A little place just south of Mexico City calls to me.  La Isla de las Muñecas “The Island of the Dolls” – allegedly one of the most haunted places on earth.

And this man – Don Julian Santana Barrera – was  single-handedly responsible for collecting and placing the dolls all around the island.

All of the legend and supernatural lore that revolves around this creeptastical island would make it an ideal location for ghost hunters to explore. It has certainly been become a hot destination for any spooky-thrill seekers. But you don’t have to be a ghostbuster to enjoy this island – the decrepit dolls make beautiful subjects for photography.

Allegedly haunted by the spirit of little girl who had drowned on the island, Barrera started to collect and hang up the dolls on the island to placate her restless spirit.

The  collecting and hanging up of dolls became an obsession for Barrera .

One that he was dedicated to until the day he died.

I can only imagine the bizarre ambiance of this island. Hot and thick with disrepair.

Beady plastic eyes always staring.

Imagined (or real?) voices whispering to each other and to you.

So who wants to go to Mexico?!
