Release: Hits theaters May 30, 2014
Director: Robert Stromberg
Starring: Angelina Jolie
Plot: A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal – an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora.
Thoughts: The whole retelling a story from the villain’s perspective is trending in Hollywood, no doubt. Am I glad that Maleficent is getting this treatment? Yes and no. Maleficent is arguably the darkest and cruelest of Disney villains. Her name literally means harmful or evil in intent or effect. She doesn’t put up with shit and has terrified many a small child. For me, that terror turned into pure adoration as I grew up, and the evil dark queen now holds a very special place in my black heart. For the sake of all things evil, I hope they don’t twist it so that she “finds the light” again and sheds her sexy villainous ways, but I’m not holding my breath. However, the prolific and prominent television and comic writer Paul Dini was involved with writing this flick, that has to mean there’s some hope for it, right?
