Plot: Returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident, Jessabelle comes face to face with a long-tormented spirit that has been seeking her return — and has no intention of letting her escape.
Thoughts: Set for release in late August of 2014, Jessabelle is the first haunted house flick to catch my eye in quite a while. It seems to have a little bit of everything, which makes it more interesting than the standard ‘house is haunted and wants to kill inhabitant’ film. The multiple angles that are presented in the trailer (the dead parent, the psychic, the dead lover, the terrible accident, the voodoo, and the weird tarot reading video) could make for a very interesting plot. I was a big fan of Cabin in the Woods, and this trailer suggests that we might have more than your average evil spirit movie ahead of us.
While the PG-13 rating suggests that the film will be lacking in the blood and guts department, I think the movie has a lot of potential to be spooky without relying on tearing protagonists apart. I’m sure it promises some of the jump scares and orchestral bursts that have become staples in contemporary suspense and horror. I hope that the multi-dimensional plot potential is fully utilized to make this a less predictable spooky flick. Since the producers of Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Oculus are behind the film, I don’t expect to be disappointed.
