Raising kids is tough. Keeping them alive as the zombie apocalypse begins is tougher. But that’s exactly what stay-at-home mom Karen needs to do: fight fiercely to keep her young daughters safe as her husband Jim battles his way across the city, so they can escape the carnage together. On the worst day of her life, Karen finds that she will do anything to protect her family, and that the line between life and death has teeth.
A while back I wrote about The Infected: Jim’s First Day by Joseph Zombie Zuko. This past weekend the second book in The Infected series was released and details the experiences of Jim’s wife, Karen. The short version of my review is: This book is awesome! It’s a lot of fun to read and particularly relevant for Gores Truly contributors and readers as it’s the only zombie apocalypse book that I know of which features a stay at home mother and her young children as the main characters. (Granted, there are other characters and still plenty of action. Zuko jumps around between different groups of survivors in this book, but the story flows well.) The book features what I imagine is a realistic portrayal of people trying to survive after the undead rise. So expect plenty of violence, blood, and strong language. “Shucks” doesn’t exactly do justice to zombies breaking down your patio door.
I’ll say it with great conviction – this book is different. Parents will likely relate to some of Karen’s struggles over the course of the book as she strives to keep herself and her children alive. A perk of starting this series is that it’s fairly early on, and both books are currently available for free for Kindle Unlimited subscribers. If you’re interested in reading more awesome zombie fiction but don’t have a Kindle, don’t fret. You can always read online or download one of the Kindle Reading Apps for your smartphone, tablet, or other device.
