Plot: New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. ‘The Witch‘ is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil.
Directed and Written by: Robert Eggers
Starring: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie
Our thoughts: The Witch looks truly unnerving. Black magic, a family torn apart, and the rising madness spawned by fear of the unknown. While it appears to lack the typical jump scare gore fest many look for in recent horror movies, it provides horrors far more emotional and psychological – ones that are truly born of a family falling apart. The Witch has already claimed the Best Director prize in the U.S. Narrative Competition and is slated to open in theaters on February 19th, 2016. Be sure to stay tuned for a full review. This is one we simply can not miss.
